How It Works

RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the structured, JSON-based successor to the older plain-text WHOIS protocol, designed to give consistent, machine-readable results across registries. This tool queries a public RDAP bootstrap service, which finds and queries the correct authoritative registry for the domain's TLD.

Coverage note: most common top-level domains (.com, .net, .org, and many others) support RDAP, but not every registry does yet. When a registry doesn't support RDAP, this is reported clearly rather than showing fabricated data. Some registrars also redact registrant details for privacy — that's the registry's choice, not a limitation of this tool.

Examples & Common Use Cases

  • Check when a domain's registration expires before it lapses.
  • Verify a domain's name servers point where you expect after a DNS migration.
  • Confirm a newly registered domain's registration date as part of a phishing/fraud investigation.
